I Disagreed with Obama? What Trump has done makes those differences insignificant - or should.

I disagreed with Obama.
But what Trump has done makes those differences insignificant.

As it was with George W. Bush and every other president who preceded him, Barack Obama made policy decisions I found troubling.

Obama once described the driving principle of his foreign policy as little more than “don’t do stupid s---.” That reflexive reaction to Bush’s military adventurism led to U.S. inaction in the face of some 500,000 Syrian deaths and the greatest refugee crisis since World War II. Domestically, Obama failed to pass a significant piece of legislation during his final six years in office.

And yet, 100 years from now, Obama’s presidency will be hailed as the most transformative of our lifetimes, and Donald Trump’s will be viewed with the same scorn that followed the Dred Scott decision. Like that pre-Civil War Supreme Court case, Trump will forever be condemned as a racial reprobate whose words and actions inspired white supremacists and neo-Nazis.

Last week’s slaughter of Muslims in New Zealand was allegedly committed by a fascist who claimed to draw inspiration from President Trump, among others. It was the latest in a long line of tragedies that our president failed to clearly condemn. After the 2017 riots in Charlottesville, Trump proclaimed a moral equivalence between neo-Nazis and their opponents. Following the killings in Christchurch, the president dismissed the threat of white supremacy while claiming the rising tide of violence coming from the far right was limited to a few troublemakers with “very serious problems.”

Trump’s acting chief of staff appeared on national television to declare that “the president is not a white supremacist.” White House counselor Kellyanne Conway once again shamed herself by dismissing the fascist mass murderer from Australia as an “eco-terrorist.” The president’s apologists denied that the current commander in chief was inspiring right-wing violence. But the Center for Strategic and International Studies reported in November that far-right attacks rose in Europe by 43 percent since 2016, while right-wing terrorist attacks have quadrupled in the United States over the same time. Hate crimes rose 17 percent in 2017.

This troubling chapter in U.S. history has one author — and his name is Donald Trump. This sputtering reality star has created a political identity and corrupt presidency inspired by the wave of racism that followed Obama’s. The Manhattan multimillionaire’s 2016 calls for a Muslim ban and creation of a Muslim registry; the claim of ignorance toward former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke; the attack on a Hispanic judge’s integrity; the callousness shown toward a Muslim Gold Star family; and the anti-Semitic tweet featuring a Star of David and piles of $100 bills next to Hillary Clinton’s face. These are just a few of the racially charged offenses that Trump committed even before Americans elected him president.

The shocking conclusion to the 2016 campaign made millions of Americans, including me, look foolish for believing that Obama’s victories in 2008 and 2012 had proved that the United States had emerged from the scourge of racism infecting it for more than four centuries. I remain shocked that this strain of bigotry still fuels the political careers of Trump and his enablers on Capitol Hill.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. often said that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” That is but one reason why the rise in bigotry shown to Muslims, Jews, Hispanics, blacks and “others” has been so discouraging in the age of Trump. Like those who believed these racists were relics from a bygone age, I had also convinced myself that my Republican colleagues were so repelled by racism that they would never support a leader who provided inspiration to neo-Nazis and white supremacists; the manifesto of the New Zealand killer and the words of David Duke after Charlottesville showed just how wrong I was.

That’s why any policy differences I had with Obama now seem so insignificant. Americans who still have faith in the upward arc of King’s moral universe should be grateful for Obama’s presidency and the way his election exposed the white racism that is still at large in our land. If changing the Constitution and reelecting Obama two more times would break the fever that now ravages Trump’s Washington, I would cheerfully champion the passage of that constitutional amendment, slap a “Hope and Change” sticker on my shirt, and race to the nearest voting booth to support the man historians will remember as the most significant president since Abraham Lincoln.

I disagreed with Obama. But what Trump has done makes those differences insignificant

This is the perfect example of what I would like the people who have 'right' conservative views and ideals to be like.
I have never agreed with much Joe Scarborough has had to say about politicians or politics. He's a rightie. He was a real right wing GOP favorite celebrity - until he came out against the fat orange turd Dear Bleater, at least.
But, he's able to see that the worst thing that has happened politically in America's history is the election of said fat orange turd. He's able to put aside his personal distaste for most of Obama's policies and say that he was still preferable to the buffoon now sitting in the OVal Office.
This is a person who thinks beyond his own political power, his own greed, his own self righteous importance - even his own security.

Everytime I see a person defend the fat orange turd because of some nauseating thing like some more have jobs now - because that excuses gross human and civil rights indignities! - I lose total respect and caring for that person. Sadly, it's happened to me in real life with friends (luckily my family knows better) - and it's happening on daily basis online in forums and on social media.
I'm actually quite sad about it. And very angry. But, mostly, just sad.

I disagreed with Obama! He was a lying, duplicitous warmonger who became known as 'Drone Bomber in Chief' for good reason! He wanted America's wars to be secret wars, and making them secret only takes no Americans getting killed and no MSM cameras covering the bombs and missiles dropping over there!

On the domestic front, Obama didn't do crap about climate change: "All of the above" strategy! Healthcare? What happened to that offer of a Medicare buy-in? I think you got that yanked away around the time the Big Oh armtwisted Dennis Kucinich into voting for the ACA and supporting it.....for now! And "for now" turned out to be until the DCCC could get Kucinich redistricted out of the House...since he was too popular in Cleveland to primary out of existence! So, even in your best Democratic fantasies of Hillary winning the presidency....as fake glass shards were dropped loose from the ceiling at her victory party on Election Night (a victory for "all" women) you would have got more money stoked into the coffers of billion dollar health insurance companies...and THAT is the best you could have expected from Obama's ticking time bomb of a healthcare solution that was set to explode after he left office! It didn't even require destruction by Trump or any Republicans to fail if you are able or williing to be honest about it!

Then, there's his gift to his friends on Wall Street...major investment banking institutions.....who are now rewarding the Big Oh for his services at a record $400,000 per speech...and no doubt other corrupt and supposedly illegal backhand rewards that we will likely never know about, if no one in the know is motivated and able to talk about it later! All this while millions of homeowners.....many of whom were new African American buyers...being told that for the first time in their lives they could own a house instead of having to pay rent forever... were bankrupted by fraudulent mortgages...some written with embedded "escalator" clauses that would continually increase monthly payments each year and unlike debts owed by corporations and billionaires, cannot be escaped through bankruptcy protection!

And, there is so much more that this narcissistic asshole who is only concerned about image and popularity should not be allowed to dodge or escape from!
So FUCK Obama and FUCK Joe Scarboro and FUCK the Washington Post and the rest of the Neocon propaganda shit continuously churned out and regurgitated by so called 'legitimate' media! These assholes are the reason Donald Trump is sitting in the White House today! The Big Oh paved the way for a Trump takeover by not standing for anything except continually working with centrists to hamstring the left and prevent policies and solutions that a growing majority of people wanted! And look what happened. Most Americans did not agree that "things are pretty great in America now" and Donald Trump was able to ride in on a white horse to Washington and present himself as the reformer who would!

Historically, Americans should look back at the Depression Era German regime known as the Weimar Republic, and how its weak and ineffectual governance, only concerned with suppressing the German left led directly to the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party! Is Donald the new Hitler? Better hope not, cause there are a lot of similarities, both in him and his weak, ineffectual opposition!

Honestly, I never thought the US had shaken off racism.

During Obama's tenure, I knew people who just barely concealed a seething hatred of Obama based on his being black.
Sure there were! But, now that Obama has been gone long enough, more and more Black Americans are recognizing the fact that he wasn't there to represent them or work for them! And if anything, he used those racial attacks as cover to do nothing to redress race-based education, policing and economic inequality! Remember his "Beer Summit?" A cop with a record of complaints against him is invited to sit down with Oh and the black university professor who was arrested by the cop while trying to climb in through a window at his own house after accidentally locking himself out! That should have been a case in point for how Obama would govern whether he had one term or two in the White House!

After he was gone, income and wealth inequality by race was worse than it was in 08. And as with Billy, time is Obama's real enemy! Maybe not for centrist soft liberal democrats, but everyone else who wants real policies that benefit the majority of people and are actually intended to fix real problems becomes less and less impressed by Obama's and Clinton's flash and real substance as the years pass by! In Obama's final year in office at the annual correspondents dinner, empty headed liberals were all over social media beating off to a clip of Obama ending with a mike drop! Wow! A president who's so cool he can do a mike drop! That really helped a lot of people's bank accounts!

In other words, you got nothing! You've even said here before that you care NOTHING about economic issues! And I got no time for pampered idle richie riches who only need to care about their identity issues! But, you might want to wake up some time before it's too late that your loud gay rights constituency will get rolled over by the rightwing fascist mobs if you make no alliances with the left! The only people who will support any of these causes are on the left/not the comfortable capitalist upper classes!

Get a grip. Your rants are getting out of hand...as I said, you're crazy.
Have your meds adjusted.

I "got nothing?" You truly expect people to take the ramblings and rantings of a person in a psychotic state to be taken seriously and responded to point by point?
I repeat: you're crazy.
