Pearl Harbor

What would have happened if instead of attacking Pearl Harbor, the Japanese had attacked the tank farm on the hill above Pearl Harbor, and destroyed the oil and gasoline supplies.

The US Navy in the Pacific would have to operate out of California, there would have been no bloody shirt to wave.
It would have been difficult if not impossible to unite the nation over an oil fire.
And the effect naval operations in the Pacific would have been more devastating than the result of the Pearl Harbor attack.

When asked after the war, the Japanese war planners said it never crossed their minds, they couldn't imagine the "Rich Nation" without oil.
You do understand during WW2 the US was the worlds largest Oil supplier. We supplied oil for the Soviet Union, UK, and Australia war machines.

A big negative for the Japanese was that the Air Craft Carriers..Enterprise, Yorktown and Lexington were not at Pearl when the Japanese attacked... The Battleships would prove to be an obsolete weapons system as the War wore on.. So their damage did not mean much...

2nd major mistake was that the Japanese withdrew and did not make a 2nd attack and take out the Navy's oil storage tanks on Ford Island....Either of these would have made a drastic change in the War in the Pacific... Probably forcing the USA to surrender the Philippines, the Western Pacific and Leaving Australia to the mercy of the Japanese...

True....but,the time it would have taken to rebuild the storage tanks and then refill them would have allowed the Japanese to take-over all of the Western Pacific....

There mistake was not putting a land force on the Hawai'ian Islands

if they had they would have not only held the islands, they would have control over the fleet and could have savlaged the ships for their own warships. leaving the west coast of the US totally open to naval attacks.

This would have forced the US to take a Japan First instead of taking Europe first,

UK would have fell, then the Germans would have only had a one front war against the USSR.

this would have given the Germans time to Develop the bomb, and left the US and Canada isolated they already had allies in South America.

leaving the US to fight a 3 front war. And if Japan could have taken Alaska then the Western provnces of Canada a 4 front war.

But resupplying Pearl Harbor would have taken a while, and naval operations around Pearl Harbor would have been greatly curtailed, and Japanese subs and surface vessels would have played havoc on the tankers trying to resupply Pearl.

Not a mistake....The Japanese simply did not have the logistics to support a major land force on the Hawaiian Islands.. That is why they were forced to try to take the Midway Islands first as a support base for an invasion of the Hawaiian Islands

they should have TAKEN the oil supply with ground forces not destroy it. see my previous post.

If I was the AXIS Commander I Japan would have invaded and taken Hawai'i

Hitler would have followed through with Barbarosa and taken the UK.

Hitler was months from getting the Bomb when Germany Fell, Then this would have opened the door to taking the USSR. the East coast of the US.

US would be tied up defending the west coast defending Alaska, Canada would have been forced to defend the western provences

and we would be living "The man in the High Castle"

If the battle of Khalkhyn Gol had been successful for Japan, history would be quite different today.

Hawaii was not Japan's primary objective...The Japanese Islands were resource poor and needed resources... bauxite, iron ore, rubber and oil.. The Japanese military had two factions....One (the Army) wanted to continue into Manchuria, into Russia....and the other (Navy)wanted to go south Borneo, Sumatra, Malaya and Indochina....

The Japanese objective was that if they eliminated the American battle fleet the Americans would sue for peace and leave them alone....Adm.Isoruku Yamamoto advised the military...."Don't awaken the sleeping giant"

And it cost them the war. Who was going to defy them if they had taken Hawai'i salvaged the Pacific Fleet there would have been no base for the US to Island hop.
