How'd this happen?

"So a general gets on, sent obviously by Obama, and he said, 'Mr. Trump doesn't understand. He knows nothing about defense.' I know more about offense and defense than they will ever understand, believe me. Believe me. Than they will ever understand. Than they will ever understand."
“No one is more conservative than me.”
“Nobody’s ever been more successful than me.”
"I think nobody knows more about taxes than I do, maybe in the history of the world. Nobody knows more about taxes."
"I know more about renewables than any human being on Earth."
“I can be more presidential than anybody. I would say more presidential, and I’ve said this a couple of times, more presidential other than the great Abe Lincoln.”
“No one respects women more than me. No one reads the Bible more than me.”
"Nobody in the history of this country has ever known so much about infrastructure as Donald Trump."
“I am the least racist person you’ll ever meet.”
“There’s nobody more pro-Israel than I am.”
“There’s nobody that’s done so much for equality as I have.”
“There’s nobody who feels more strongly about women’s health issues.”
"Nobody knows more about trade than me."
"I understand social media. I understand the power of Twitter. I understand the power of Facebook maybe better than almost anybody, based on my results, right?"
"Nobody knows more about debt. I'm like the king. I love debt."
"Nobody knows banking better than I do"
"I understand money better than anybody. I understand it far better than Hillary, and I'm way up on the economy when it comes to questions on the economy."
"I think nobody knows the system better than I do."
“No one is stronger on the Second Amendment than me.”
"Nobody knows the system better than I do."
"Nobody knows politicians better than Donald Trump."
"There's nobody bigger or better at the military than I am."
"I know more about ISIS [the Islamic State militant group] than the generals do. Believe me."
"There is nobody who understands the horror of nuclear more than me."
"Because nobody knows the system better than me. I know the H1B. I know the H2B. Nobody knows it better than me."

That's how.

A big portion of the middle class, the one that got their manufacturing jobs exported to China fell down the status pyramid and some even through the very loose safety net. Those are the people Trump is very successfully playing to. They are his base and he got a lot of swing votes through a very loud and successful campaign. There is a problem in America, not everyone can be a highly intelligent and qualified computer specialist. This problem will not go away with Trump.

Also, I look back at the various absolutely stupid criticism against the previous (importantly, he was a Democrat) president and recognize the Repubs have completely ignored those standards regarding the sitting president.
If Obama had said those things, the Repubs would have been up in arms screaming it from the roof-tops!
Trump said it and the guy they love "Cause he speaks his mind" suddenly is being "rephrased" as "Well, what he meant to say was..."

For several presidential election cycles, I have seen some Repubs who were more "zealous" get behind candidates who were louder and more extreme. Inevitably, the nomination / primary cycle eliminated them and left more moderate candidates whom the more "zealous" Repubs didn't like.
This election cycle is the first I've seen where the louder and more extreme Republican candidate won.

I think what you describe is a big part of it.
Many were pissed off the economy didn't recover more quickly. The Dems trying to push the economy being okay didn't resonate well with them.

Obama won in 2008 when he spoke of "Hope and Change" while it was McCain who was trying to minimize the recognition of what was later known as "The Great Recession"
Then in 2016, the roles were flipped while the economy's situation was nowhere near as dire. But there were still enough people pissed off at the economy's / job's situation to get Trump in the White House.

What's truly sad (IMO) is these people don't seem to grasp that this is all a weakness brought on by income inequality. There are multiple studies / economic groups documenting this...
Inequality is slowing US economic growth: Faster wage growth for low- and middle-wage workers is the solution
http://www.ncsl.org/Portals/1/Documents/forum/Forum_2014/Income_Inequality.pdf
Is growing inequality hurting our economies? - Equitable Growth
But Repubs push the ideal that the economic machinery is not hindered by income inequality and it's just about people who are jealous and want free handouts. They push the line that people need to work harder.
But this ignores the fact that the American worker is already working incredibly hard compared to the rest of the world. Productivity is high and amount of hours put in are high while vacations taken are low, but the Repubs push the talking points that help those in charge squeeze more out of the workers while the vast majority of the newly earned growth goes to the upper 1%.

As long as the Repubs keep successfully lying to a gullible base, they'll win that. To demonstrate their embracing of the lie, they elected a pathological liar to office...

On another level, when I read the question on the thread, I thought of the ol' Christian chestnut of answering the question of "How did we get to this place?" by illogically whining about Christ being taken out of schools...

The reality is that many Christians who are out of school have simply turned their back on their previous values because they are no longer convenient to hold with their favored politician (Trump) in office...

Here's what happened when Trump got the surprise of his life---The U.S. Presidency: He pulled back the curtain.
Everything was exposed---things like ignorance, bigotry, arrogance, greed, lust, anger, envy, corruption, weakness,
smallness.
Try to imagine every possible American nightmare scenario and Trump has exposed it and in fact, has shined a light on it.

AND I'm not just talking about Trump. I'm talking about anyone and everyone who has ignored Trump's obvious psychosis and continued to make excuses for his astonishing behavior. We are witnessing something completely unprecedented.

The truth is we got to this point because Trump is a weak man, supported by weak-minded people. Because of this, WE have become a weak nation. This is not JUST an opinion. Look at the statistics. Look at the attitudes---the scorn for handouts, the equating of universal health care with socialism, the obsession with self-reliance, the refusal to see that a profusion of guns leads to a profusion of mass shootings--the hatred for all things across the pond--the acceptance of adultery and porn star pay-outs, the disregard for public education, the confrontations over race, gender, and identity--the applause for a needy narcissist, a womanizer, a lowlife, a liar, a braggart and a generally miserable human being.

The curtain has revealed many things but ONE thing stands out. Americans elected Trump. Nobody else did. They came down to his level. White Christian males losing their place in the social order decided they’d do anything to save themselves, and to heck with morality. They made a bargain with the devil in full knowledge. What have we become?

And the record deficit? 205 Billion, for November, one month?
Is that just fine?

Record deficit.

the Deficit in 2010 was 1,600 billion with a GDP of <1%..

The Defict for FY 2018 was 877 billion ~50% LESS THAN THE RECORD.
