Self-reconfiguring modular robotics is an emerging concept that involves simple modular units capable of connecting to or disconnecting from each other to perform random tasks; it involves the whole of the parts being able to achieve things that the individual parts cannot achieve on their own.

Note from the following video that it is not necessary for each modular unit to have any wheels to make the collective of modular units capable of being mobile in various configurations:
