HISTORY LESSON ON YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD
YOU MIGHT WANNA READ THIS !!!!
Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn’t know this. It’s easy to check out, if you don’t believe it. Be sure and show it to your family and friends. They need a little history lesson on what’s what and it doesn’t matter whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts.
Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly stated the number and card were not to be used for identification purposes.
Since nearly everyone in the United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION message was removed.
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. His promises are in black, with updates in red.
1.) That participation in the Program would be Completely voluntary [No longer voluntary],
2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program [Now 7.65% on the first $90,000, and 15% on the first $90,000 if you’re self-employed],
3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year [No longer tax deductible],
4.) That the money the participants put into the independent ‘Trust Fund’ rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program [Under Johnson the money was moved to the General Fund and Spent], and
5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income [Under Clinton & Gore up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed].
Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month — and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to ‘put away’ — you may be interested in the following:
Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent ‘Trust Fund’ and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate.
Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?
A: The Democratic Party.
Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the ‘tie-breaking’ deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US
AND MY FAVORITE:
Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?
A: That’s right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!
Now, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!
And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it! If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and maybe changes will evolve. Maybe not, though. Some Democrats are awfully sure of what isn’t so — but it’s worth a try. How many people can YOU send this to?

One of the ugliest tropes in American politics is to say "Social Security is going broke." Although there are structural funding problems with the system, to say that the nation's most successful annuity program is going bust is a lie. It can be fixed and only politics blocks a reasonable remedy.

But that didn't stop dozens of Fox News outlets from proclaiming otherwise. They got their facts wrong and wanted to scare people without providing context.

Fox anchors read this statement: "The Social Security Board of Trustees said [in] its 2017 annual report that 2022 will make the first time in more than 40 years that Social Security pays out more in benefits than it takes in. And so deficits are going to continue to be depleted out of the roughly $3 trillion in asset reserves."

Two parts of this report are false. 1) The Social Security trust fund will not be depleted in 2022, as implied by this statement. 2) The trust fund will remain solvent until 2034, not 2022. This is not my math, it's what the latest Social Security Trustees annual report states.

Although the Trustees's report can get dense in detail, it lays out projections. The deficit situation is based on current data on retirements and the aging of the American population.

Congress can change the way Social Security is funded any time, so none of these numbers are written in stone. To date, though, only the Democrats have proposed solutions, although the GOP-led White House and Congress haven't acted to fix the problem.

Those who want to undermine or deep-six Social Security spread the false message that it won't be around, particularly for future generations. That's been a strategy of those who want to destroy social insurance programs for decades. But it's simply not true, since Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are essential -- and successful -- in reducing poverty.

Of course, it's all lies. Social Security, Medicare, ACA and all other social programs have always been something of an obsession for the GOP.
Imagine.....the government actually governing so that the American people come first. Imagine ....sparing real people from poverty, sickness, illiteracy, homelessness, hunger. Imagine.....CHANGE--something called PROGRESS. It just can't be tolerated!
So the GOP threatens, lies, and creates unimaginable scenarios (death panels) in which it's the Democrats who are determined to RUIN this nation. AND the stupid among us---BUY IT. They are willing to actually SCREW themselves in order to be faithful to their party. It's an act of cowardice. Born out of ignorance.
AND what happens time after time? The majority of Americans LOVE the programs--with all their flaws--THEY depend on the programs because the programs make their lives better. The same thing happened to ACA. After all the pushing and shoving and whopping distortions? Americans said--HEY wait a minute---ACA may not be perfect but my child has pre-existing conditions. My spouse has pre-existing conditions. We don't want to experience bankruptcy because we can't afford a drug for cancer.
AND then those "satisfied" Americans said "Okay. If you think you can do BETTER, Mr. Republican, CREATE something better. Tell us about your PLAN."
WE all know what happened. Nothing. That's what happened.
Even when the GOP congress OWNED this country----they couldn't "create" anything.

Thanks for the link. You've made it even worse.

SS was never voluntary.
It was taxed up to $3000, not $1400
It was never deductible

Man, the democrats were more tyrannical than I thought.
BTW, Republicans, when they had the majority, never really made anything better for SS.

The biggest part of all this that you're missing, is the US dollar value. Inflation goes up faster than SS raises are enacted. By the time SS recipients get a raise, it's not enough to cover the inflation that's eating up a big chunk of their benefits.

BTW, I did notice that none of you have addressed the fact that DEMOCRATS, along with republicrats, are still taxing social security. How tyrannical is that? Taxing the tax's you've already paid in.

There is no reason why SS should be voluntary
Who care what the original max income to which FICA was applied?
You were wrong on your complaints about deductibility.

Well, I suppose progress can be considered when you accept reality rather than fantasy. You still need to work on the spin and develop some insight into your faith in whatever spin-machine you relied upon to generate your polemic.

Well only a few lies, I'll let you figure which ones are lies and which ones are meaningless.

All in all though, a very good argument to Vote For Elizabeth Warren, who has a policy to increase Social Security payments......
