Where did I say Nixon was my hero? I said he got us out of Vietnam... LBJ's war
This caught my eye. It was France's war, & Vietnam's. FDR was absolutely opposed to reestablishing any empires, whether British, French, what-have-you in the process of fighting WWII. FDR died in office, & Truman was somehow convinced to aid the French in their attempt to reconquer Vietnam. Pres. Eisenhower resisted the call for US troops & possibly US nukes to rescue the French. But we still picked up a lot of the French military expenditures budget ($1 billion by 1954 - 80% of the French military expenditures to that date - see Vietnam War - Wikipedia) & I believe we abandoned equipment, small arms, ammo, arty, uniforms & on & on to the French, & provided transport for the French Foreign Legion & other troops from France & Africa @ the end of WWII, as well.

So yah, LBJ didn't want to be tagged as having lost the war. It was never our war to begin with, LBJ would have done better (my opinion) to cut our losses, recognize that VN was a hopeless military/political basket case, & allow the patient to die with whatever dignity it could muster. After years of effort, piles of money & equipment & personnel (military & spook & diplomatic - both US, Allied, & VN), & giving diplomatic cover to a series of feckless regimes, we'd done all that was reasonable to do.

I actually hate that they're burning down one of the most stunning and historically, culturally and architecturally relevant cities in the world.

I have spent too many wonderful weeks - and seen too many splendid things - to be happy to see the city being burned.
