America has been staging a “fascinating political-science experiment” for the past few months,The question being tested: how far can an “uninspiring” political candidate get if they have an essentially unlimited war chest? two weeks ago, we got the answer: “Not very far at all!” Former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg spent more than half a billion dollars on his three-month campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, hiring an army of staff and deluging the airwaves with adverts. Yet after all that, he failed to win a single state in last week’s Super Tuesday contests, leading him to bow out of the contest. His only victory was in the tiny territory of American Samoa, where wall-to-wall ads and seven full-time staff helped him win 49.9% of the vote, or 175 actual votes. The Bloomberg run was “the most expensive failure in American political history”.
