The statue of liberty was to symbolize abolition of slavery.

I was talking to one of my kids today. (I know, tue horror) and this came up. Not only was the statue given to the states to symbolize the abolition of slavery but also to commemorate blacks roll in the norths victory and that the original model was a black woman. I then asked my other kid if she had heard this and she also was aware of these theories. They both reacted like besides the ethnicity of the model the reason the statue was gifted to the states was common knowledge though neither could remember specifically if this was taught to them they both believed that it probably was. I found this interesting as i had never even heard that theory (the black model i had)

I dove into zee google and it was all over there.

How strange.
