"...But be honest for once about where your real priorities lie...."

'...already accounted for 54% of DISCRETIONARY spending...."

Damn, you're elitist on top of dishonest. I'm all ready, have been, to give up the Empire, slash consumption and the West's high "standard of living" which is a holdover from colonial times and which is driven by obscene levels of consumption, and put the US on a completely sustainable footing showing the world what can be done and how to do it.

However, I'm quite sure that every bit of Empire and every bit of fossil-fueled consumption relinquished will be instantly snapped up by regimes equally or more corrupt than ours, because the global system humankind has created is non-sustainably putrid to its core, and this putrid system is almost certainly controlled by people who are completely invisible. Aliens and lizard people cannot summarily be dismissed, weird as that sounds to say.

You?
I've mentioned my personal story a number of times before, but this has nothing to do with any personal growth stories! This is about whether you support Trump opposition at any cost, or do you have redlines that you are not willing to cross to support the system, or the candidates who are fighting for a chance to represent the system...and hopefully are honest about making a few changes.

You've ignored the glaring evidence that the US started to ramp up military spending and imperial overreach as soon as the Soviet Union collapsed and rushed in to pick up the pieces....and according to some former officials, wanted Russia to disintegrate into smaller, more manageable countries as well, a pattern seen in the former Yugoslavia, and all across Africa and the Middle East today.

Did the American Empire expect no pushback? If they did believe it was "the end of history" as Francis Fukayama declared and lesser asshats like Tom Friedman tried to follow up on, that we were now in a 'Unipolar' age of American-based power and global capitalism reigning supreme over the entire world. This was the cryptic "New World Order" that HW Bush and other scoundrels failed to describe in full. They wanted everyone to believe it was just about a new age of peace and end of nuclear war threats, but not everyone was willing to buy in to their plans!

So, as it stands now, those pie charts showing military spending per nation still show the American slice larger than the top 10 next combined, BUT with China rising rapidly...doubling their military spending in the past 10 or so years. So, that canard about 'regimes equally or more corrupt than ours' is without merit, because it was the United States and imperial hangers-on who decided that communism and socialism had to end/not capitalism! So, surprise, surprise, sustainability is a pipedream in a world where the only economic system depends on continuous growth!

If sustainable economics that provided adequate food and necessities for everyone was the standard, we wouldn't have the need for continuous 3% annual growth needed to maintain a balanced capitalist system! We wouldn't have or need the ridiculous proliferation of competing consumer products that offer no real consumer choices but just overwhelm the consumer with an array of slight alternatives of essentially the same product. The demands on energy and resource extraction...which are reaching a critical point in many essential resources, are fueling the ruthless regime changes, with wars and civil wars. Case in point: Venezuela: there are only two reasons why Trump and allied Democrats and vassal states like Canada are recognizing an unknown and unelected agent named Juan Guiado:
one: Trump's primary benefactors -- the Brothers Koch, own the largest refinery in America, located in Texas, and it was built specifically for processing heavy oil/not light crude! So, they tried to engineer the overthrow of Hugo Chavez when he spoiled their game in 99/2000 and started demanding more money for Venezuelan crude. The only other alternative was tarsands diluted bitumen...and that's the reason for Keystone XL....which is still stalling out. So, somebody lit a fire under Trump, and no one will be surprised if it's not one of Trump's major financiers.
two: In order to compensate for sanctions, blockades and outright theft of Venezuelan government assets abroad adding up to 11 billion, Maduro is rushing through plans to allow mining operations to open up in the Amazon Valley of southern Venezuela...a region inhabited by the last wild and undiscovered tribes in the world and off limits to developers of any kind, along with outsiders....including Venezuelan citizens without special permits. But, it seems like desperatiion is forcing his hand to get foreign currency...and China as of now, will be the big winner, because why the fuck would Venezuela want American or Canadian-based mining companies coming in and extracting gold, diamonds and col-tan? One Cdn mining company had their 5 billion contract cancelled two years ago, and our 'Liberal' altruistic political leaders are hoping for regime change to get Barrick Gold and others back to work.

So, the opportunities were available if the UN grew into a system like it originally promised, that could provide strong international governance able to override the worst moves by national governments, the next world war could have been prevented! But those chances have been pissed away.

U.S. to end large-scale military drills with South Korea

Defend this... Somebody explain to me how this helps the US, and isn't a direct gift to Russia and North Korea

I'm begging for someone to defend this

Pretty easy. North Korea is basically a slave state. They are taught in school about the evil american imperialists killing babies and what not. Our war games only serve to reinforce this. Our goal shouls be aiding Korea to re unite not keeping the north retreating in fear. Has any other approach worked? This is a move forward.

Check out anything by Michael malice on North Korea there are a number of lectures on YouTube on the subject.

Or read/listen to dear reader

You love to rant, and you love to rant against someone. So, whoever you're addressing you imbue with all the traits and opinions you need to make your rant. Example?

"You've ignored the glaring evidence that the US started to ramp up military spending and imperial overreach as soon as the Soviet Union collapsed...."

Where the hell did I ever say that? My opinion AT THE TIME was the rationale for NATO no longer exists. Those were the giddy days of thinking about the "peace dividend."

Instead, since the breakup of the USSR, and the Warsaw Pact, 13 new member states have been added. The neocons promoted their Project for a New American Century, lamented the emasculation of our armed forces, and beginning with GW ramped defense spending up to Cold War levels.

My advice to you, take it or leave it: stay a little more focused, be more concise, and lay the hell off making and tearing down strawmen.

You are spending more than half of your annual federal budget now on military and related costs, and if you're not paying attention to the news of late, Trump and Kim are supposed to have another meeting to try to reach an agreement...maybe without Bolton or Pompeo around, it might mean that Trump can wind down at least one war...which is better than nothing to anyone who has considered the potential impacts of allowing nuclear proliferation to continue on and expand further!

If you did more than read the headlines in our news/propaganda, you'd be aware that the North Korean nuclear threat is the reason why they were not subject to Iraq-style regime change. But, their negotiating team in Hanoi this week were expecting to offer up nuclear weapons and weapons development facilities in return for an end to US sanctions and a formal end of the Korean War, along with some sort of guarantees that the next administration cannot just tear up the agreements like past presidents have done! That doesn't sound like too much to ask for from a nation that was threatened by Truman with nuclear annihilation in 1953, and with the threat of invasion every year the US and allies conduct those expensive, environmentally damaging war game practice invasion drills.
What is your point? I cannot tell.

Yes it helps the US it is not NEVER EVER AGAIN. it is a cancellation of the next 2 that were scheduled..

Remember these drills cost dollars.

so which is it Deficit are Unneeded drills with the SOKO military, we had a drill just 8 months ago.

This is just a Carrot to go with the Stick (Sanctions) to influence NOKO to be more cooperative in Negotiations.

The carrot ending of military drills, Stick Sanctions:

Your accusing me of being elitist and dishonest and demanding that I provided linked evidence for my points, and then claiming that you're on the same side and I'm misrepresenting you. Why not stick to being a moderator instead of a forum bully who's trying to reign supreme above everyone else's opinions here? Definitely the most active posting moderator I've ever encountered, and you fall back on knowing that most regulars either agree with everything you say, or don't dare challenge you!

Good god. That was pathetic and delusional. Trump is doing just the opposite of what he claims. He's emboldening Russia, China and NK. This recent pow wow with Little Kim was embarrassing as hell. His Otto Warmbier comment alone was terrible and disgusting.

BTW, how's that disarmament coming along? Hmm? Little Kim has pretty much shut the door on that one.
So, how do you "resistance" A-holes keep maneuvering your way to blaming Trump for wanting a peace agreement/not wanting to make a deal and ramping up the risks of total war on the Korean Peninsula?
