Elizabeth Warren's Labor Plan Would Be Terrible For Workers

"We cannot have a truly democratic society with so little power in the hands of working people," presidential contender Elizabeth Warren wrote in her lengthy labor plan, which she released Thursday in advance of a candidate forum hosted by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). "That's why returning power to working people will be the overarching goal of my presidency." But under the guise of empowering the working class, the Massachusetts senator's plan actually gives an awful lot of power to the federal government—and harms workers in the process.

But hey- what's a little lie or two amongst acolytes?

The problem here, really, is inadequate information on your part. E.Warren is fine.

In both a republic and a democracy, citizens are empowered to participate in a representational political system. They elect people to represent and protect their interests in how the government functions.

Key Takeaways: Republic vs. Democracy
  • Republics and democracies both provide a political system in which citizens are represented by elected officials who are swon to protect their interests.
  • In a pure democracy, laws are made directly by the voting majority leaving the rights of the minority largely unprotected.
  • In a republic, laws are made by representatives chosen the people and must comply with a constitution which specifically protects the rights of the minority from the will of the majority.
  • The United States, while basically a republic, is best described as a “representative democracy.”
In a republic, an official set of fundamental laws, like the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, prohibits the government from limiting or taking away certain “inalienable” rights of the people, even if that government was freely chosen by a majority of the people. In a pure democracy, the voting majority has almost limitless power over the minority.

The United States, like most modern nations, is neither a pure republic nor a pure democracy. Instead, it is a hybrid democratic republic.

And she was right, and you are not. Or would you prefer the government, and the elected few, have more power?

Is the United States a Republic or a Democracy?

I prefer no intentional misinterpretation to suit whatever agenda- that includes pandering to an ignorant base-

We're actually a constitutional representative democracy.
The first sign of someone screaming their ignorance is when they trot out this old canard.

Well, trump certainly appeals to an ignorant base, however, if one was not ignorant they would understand that yes, we have a republic. A representative democracy the same thing as a republic. In a republic (representative democracy) the people elect leaders that listen to their collective voices, and then those leaders get together and talk among themselves and vote on law. Is that too hard for you to grasp?
