What has gone wrong with American democracy?

Money in politics is another problem, our government is bought and paid for by the highest bidder

Super PACs being able to flood the airwaves and internet with lies and propaganda.
Tom Steyer has mentioned that to be his focus, to get corporate money out of our government, would love to see that happen, maybe then we'd have a fighting chance.

How many decades has it been since the US had anything approaching "democracy?" Almost half the US population....regularly over 40% are either unable or can't be bothered to waste a day to cast a vote that can easily be discarded or cross-checked by a range of flimsy excuses!

This is why so many people demanding real reform, are impatient and even suspicious of would-be reformers like Bernie Sanders and Liz Warren. Last time around, "reformer" Warren wouldn't endorse Bernie even though she's presenting herself as a public health insurance advocate this time around! And....whether the tag was fair or not, all Bernie did in 2016 was play the role of "sheepdog" leading the restless, unsatisfied left wing of the Democrat Party back into the Hillary Pen because..............well, Trump is worse! That wasn't good enough in 2016 for a lot of people demanding real reform, will it be enough in 2020?

Maybe if more Americans looked away from the blather on CNN or Fox News for a moment, they would notice that nearly every other country in the world that's not a one party dictatorship has a multiparty system......even up here in Canada, where we have a first-past-the-post parliamentary system. Three parties can often be a dismal choice, but at least it's better than a totally corrupt and fake two party fraud!
At this stage I'm for a no party system, people vote not by party loyalty but by what the candidates supports and their record.

MOre people register independent than with either party, so that puts you in the majority of voters. Problem is that it is even more of an impossibility to make an independent or third party candidate president, than it was back in 92, when Ross Perot came the closest in modern times!

Perot had one big issue...a promise to rip apart the NAFTA negotations that were ongoing and he could explain in THREE PARTY debates that the promise of "free trade" that would benefit all was a fraud! And a majority of working people smelled a rat....especially the rat known as bipartisanship. Both parties were hard at work telling people that removing tariffs and trade protections would benefit everyone.

Most people didn't understand the details...that removing trade and import restrictions was part of an international class war/not something to benefit Mexico or any particular poor nation. International bankers and multinational corporations wanted a global market with expanded transportation links. So, one product of industry or agriculture could be produced in one ideal location( the most competitive locale if you swallow neoliberal bullshit) and shipped worldwide to all the markets. And supposedly, EVERY other country in the world would specialize in their particular market advantages.

And so, Bill Clinton was doing his part by destroying the Labor Movement in the US and emphasizing the Knowledge economy....that came with the computer revolution and supposedly American workers would retrain for. How this asshole is still a liberal hero today after setting the table for neoliberalism is beyond me, but back in 92, the game of Bill Clinton an Bush Sr. was almost blown up by "The Little General." But that can't happen after all the "reforms" made and media consolidation since then!

Didn't Trump say the same thing four years ago?
I recall him saying our trade deals, didn't benefit us. These tariffs he's doing now maybe should have been done about a quarter of a century ago, or when Walton died and his family decided not to buy American but Chinese, or before all of our manufacturing left the country.

How much of your manufacturing growth was due to exports? Mostly tariffs end up being a two way street.

I guess you could hope that globalization of trade never happened but we all would be much poorer now.

The big problem is that Dotard can not understand the concept of a win-win situation, he doesn't believe they exist. For him for America to win, someone has to lose in his tiny little underdeveloped mind.

One of our greatest powers is not our military, but our buying power. When manufactures moved out to china to get cheap labor, then turn around and sell it back to us, that's when the tariffs should have been put in place, to discourage more companies producing somewhere else and then sell back to us. One thing Regan got right, was when he promoted to buy American. Now, we have no choice but to buy foreign.

Athena, please do not put YOUR words in MY post. I meant exactly what I said.
This might not be fair, but here what you said in another thread...

" God bless the people of Hong Kong.
God bless them. They know what the American flag means.
And yet some of our athletes take a knee during the national anthem.
Now THATs a reason to wave the flag!
What? AND nobody took a knee?
Where's Collin?
What a beautiful sight, our flag held high by people who appreciate America and our freedom
God bless them and keep them safe!
They're more patriotic than Americans. Wtf?
Let’s do a population swap - their pro-democracy/pro-American youths for our pro-socialism/anti-American snowflakes."

That sounds pretty Christian Nationalist to me. And wanting things like medical insurance for everyone is not being anti-American. I really wonder what side Jesus would stand on?

Athena. The comments above were TWEETS about the riots from people all around the country. None of the comments were MY COMMENTS.
Most of them were posted by RWingers.
I was reposting the tweets because the TOPIC THREAD was "AND Just Like That The Left Begins to Support China".
Walkaway was the DTT poster who claims it was supposed to be humorous...??

Thank you for clearing that up. I apologize for my mistake of thinking those were your words. I also don't have much of a sense of humor. I think our nation is in big trouble, and I think this involves what has happened to Christianity. But I should not be too sure of what I think. Obvious I can make pretty bad errors.
