With reports of so many US wildfires in the southwest and California, you'd think the southwestern desert would be an additional 100,000's sq mi of acreage.

Question: if these wildfires are put under control with today's technology, how were these wildfires put out BEFORE helicopters and fire trucks?

They weren't, at least not very well. Look at the Peshtigo Fire of 1871 and the Great Fire of 1910.

What followed was Smokey the Bear and the suppression of all wildfire.

What's followed that is a forest environment loaded with fuel, one that can burst into major forest fires in a heartbeat.

Next we will be trying to put out volcanos.

Clue earthlings, not all of earth is meant for us to settle.

Everything is a hoax now. The answer to your question is evident if simple common sense were employed. Growing populations are dependent on available housing. Many more dwellings and businesses are at risk today. Do you believe that anyone whose homes and businesses are at threat during a wildfire has qualms over the use helicopters and fire trucks ? Maybe they want these fires put out the old fashioned way, right ?

Let the California forests burn baby burn. The undergrowth has to be burned off for new trees to grow. Sequoia seed cones don't open to disperse seeds unless baked in a wildfire.

Longer and more intense hot spells, more frequent, more intense droughts and oversuppression of fires as IT pointed out are causing the numbers to actually increase. I'm not sure as to data on extent but wouldn't be surprised if it was not as bad due to all the efforts to control them.

They weren't, they were mainly left to burn themselves out.
This didn't matter nearly so much as today because there were so few living in these areas, it's the massive increase in the rural population of these areas which has increased their risk.

ps: Today it has been reported that at least 78 people have been killed in wildfires in Greece.
