Unlike many, I find Trump amusing. If you take him seriously you’re missing the whole point of his presidency. Trump was already predicted by renowned US journalist H. L. Mencken over a century ago in the old adage:
"As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron."
In 2016 Mencken’s prophecy was realized. Forget about healing America; certainly a narcissist and arguably a sociopath he is no fool. Mr. Trump cleverly tapped into what underpins and remains the embodiment of American society – materialism. If Mr. Trump was a tube of toothpaste, he’d be the biggest selling product in US history.
"I will give you everything. I will give you what you’ve been looking for, for 50 years. I’m the only one."
Mr. Trump bypassed politics and using himself as a brand name and MAGA as a slogan sold himself as a product to a society which maintains a hierarchy status of ‘winners’ and ‘losers’.
The son of wealthy Fred Trump who made his fortune in real estate, Donald was initially loaned $1m, which over his father’s lifetime turned into an estimated $60m (far more allowing for current inflation), most of which he failed to repay. On his father’s advice he invested in real estate and in turn became wealthy himself. In line with the current trend for ‘B’ rated celebrities to become social Ambassador’s, Donald’s narcissist and egoistic nature led him into believing that he was also the world’s best businessman. What he actually is, is a salesman and hustler and just about every business he got involved with collapsed. From Trump steaks at $999, to a Trump university that produced false advertising lawsuits which cost him $25m, a bankrupt Trump airlines and his crowning glory, starting a mortgage company just before the big recession (Duh!) … Trumps Business Empire is one disaster after another.
In Trumps world, America is doing ‘just great.’ Unmentioned in 2017 are the highest rate of bankruptcies in American history.
The trade wars proposed by Peter Navarro, Trumps trade secretary, which he suggested no one would dare to oppose resulted in return tariffs which in 2019 alone cost the tax payer an estimated $16bn in bail outs for American farmers.
The North Korean summit after promises of ‘Fire and Fury’, in which Trump was both outsmarted and sent packing with promises …
Trump will come and go and his eventual departure will go largely unnoticed because despite the rhetoric, he hasn’t actually done anything he promised. Trump was a self-advertising campaign, nothing more, nothing less.
Yet having said that, ironically be grateful for Trump. Behind him are characters such as Gina Haspel, the new UN Ambassador. Haspel’s background as CIA head and active participant in the (black site) interrogation torture center in Thailand qualify her for Freddie Kruger’s role in Nightmare on Elm Street! Or what about Elliott Abrams, currently US special envoy to Venezuela. Formerly a US Diplomat in Central America under Reagan, Abrams was convicted and jailed for complicity in supplying arms to death squads. Ironically, his title was actually Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights in El Salvador. When people like Pence, or the recently disgraced Bolton become president, then start worrying.
